The Night of the Educated Horse

Disclaimer: Don’t own anything related to The Wild Wild West.
Authors Note: This story is in reference to, The Night of the Iron Fist. I always loved when they showed us Black Jack’s tricks. This is in Black Jack’s point of view. Hope you like it.

Black Jack half reared, as his back legs pivoted in time with the pull on the reins. What’s wrong? He thought as the strange rider kicked him repeatedly to get him to canter off. His mind screamed for him to run. If not from instinct, then to stop the repeated blows to his side that made his ribs ache.

His human would never brutally kick him like that, unless there was some unforeseen danger. Danger? He felt nothing. No sense of fear. No shrill warning from his human. The reins were held too tight for him to turn his head to look at his rider. With head thrown back, he awkwardly broke into a canter. The repeated kicks didn’t stop.

Suddenly, Black Jack heard the shrill whistle from his true human. The whistle cut through his heart like a knife, causing him to react almost instantly. Throwing his head back even more, he reared to his full height. The rider slid toward his rump still holding onto the reins. Pulling his head forward, Black Jack painfully dislodged the reins from the stranger’s hands and the weight was suddenly gone. The relentless beating of his ribs was gone.

Black Jack tossed his head triumphantly, then turned toward the whistle. His human was rolling on the ground laughing, causing Black Jack to be confused. He didn’t find this funny at all. Stopping at his human’s side, he stood obediently until his human lightly grabbed the reins. As his human turned towards the stranger, Black Jack perked his ears at the sound of Jim’s voice. “Sorry Count that you had to meet my horse under such circumstances, but he’s quite educated”

Black Jack beamed with pride, at his owner’s praise. He thought he was a smart boy too! Head held high; he awaited another command from his human.
